Albert J. Leonardi Sr.

January 13, 1929   ~  September 1, 2011

Albert J. Leonardi, Sr. of Woodbury, New Jersey passed away at his residence on September 1st, at the age of 82.  Al is survived by his Son, Albert Jr. (Rosemarie), of Thorofare.  Granddaughter, Danita (Frank) Monzo of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Step-Grandchildren, Tom Sonni of Plumville, Pennsylvania and Emily Sonni of Thorofare.  Great-Grandchildren, Frankie and Hannah Monzo of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Madison Sonni of Clymer, Pennsylvania.     Pre-deceased by his Wife of 55 years, Jaye P. Leonardi in 2010, and his Brothers, Tony, Alfred, Russell, Jerry, and Sister, Rose Chambliss.

Al was born and raised in Swedesboro, New Jersey.  His Father died from a falling accident when Al was only 3 years old, leaving his Mother to raise six children and work the farm.  Al quit school in 9th grade to help with the farm chores before going to work for the American Dredging Company (ADCO) in Camden at the age of 17.  He then left work to serve his country in the Korean Conflict as an Army Corporal.  Upon his Honorable Discharge from the military, Al returned to work for ADCO until his retirement in 1995 after more than 47 years with the company, where his work nickname was “Bill Diamond”.  He was in the very first group from Gloucester County to receive the Korean War Medal.

Although never furthering his education or having a High School diploma, Al was a brilliant man.  Good with numbers and providing for his family as a hard worker.  He will always be remembered as a caring, loving and well-liked man.  All of his family and friends called him by his nickname, “Daffo”, and his many nieces and nephews affectionately called him, “Uncle Daff”.

For the last many years we’ve all called him “Pop”.  Pop loved his Phillies, and at times was quite verbal while watching the games.  We will surely miss Pop’s laughter and wonderful smile, and his Son will miss smoking a cigar and drinking a beer with his “Pop”.

Funeral services will be held, 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 7th.  Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Woolwich Township. New Jersey.  A viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 6 PM to 9 PM and on Wednesday, from 9 AM to 10:30 AM.
